Daylight saving time / Summer Time

What is Daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time (abbreviated DST) is the practice of adjusting clocks forward from the standard time during the summer months and turned them back to in the fall so that evening daylight lasts longer and makes better use of natural daylight to conserve energy.
Daylight saving time generally referred as daylight savings in many countries like as the United States , Canada , New Zealand and Australia and also known as British Summer Time or just summer time in some countries like as the United Kingdom and Chile .

History of Daylight Saving Time

The Daylight saving time idea was first introduced by Benjamin Franklin during his sojourn "Economical Project" as an American delegate in Paris in 1784. Basically, he explained how they could save a lot of money on candles if everyone simply awoke earlier and used the daylight saving more. Franklin didn’t explain something regarding adjusting time itself.
George Vernon Hudson proposed the idea of daylight saving in 1895.suggesting a two-hour time shift forward and two-hour shift back.
Builder William Willett came up with a different take on the idea he proposed setting the clocks forward 20 minutes each Sunday in April, then backward on Sundays in September. Builder William Willett kept arguing for the concept up until his death in 1915.
The first official and established use of this idea during World War II the German Empire and Austria-Hungary organized the first nationwide implementation, starting in 1916.
Following Germany's lead During world war II Britain passed an act on May 17, 1916, introducing British Summer Time and moving all clocks one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time during the summer months. British clocks are moved ahead by 80 minutes in four 20-minute increments. Many countries have used it at various times since then.

Daylight Saving Time Purpose

The real reasons daylight savings time is to make better use of natural daylight and save electricity. In the summer, our clocks are moved forward to extend an hour of daylight to the evening. if the sun is out “later” than traditional, fewer people can activate the lights in their home, and less electricity is consumed. As the Germans discovered, energy is saved when the clocks are shifted.

What is Daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time aka DST is the phenomenon, which is used to adjust the clocks ahead of the standard time. the time is set forward from the standard time in the Summers and reversed to the actual time in the Fall. The purpose of this time alteration is to cut down on energy consumption during the year. This way, the evening daylight can be consumed for longer and natural light is used to its full. Many countries such as USA go through this Daylight saving practice.

How does it work?

Starting of daylight saving time

  • The clocks are turned to Daylight Saving time when the standard time is supposed to hit
  • More evening light will be experienced because of longer Sun rising and Sun setting than earlier
  • The visibility of the Sun happens to be longer and the Sun sets later
  • Mostly the clocks are forwarded 1 hour while in some parts it is just half an hour

Ending of Daylight Saving time

  • The clocks are reversed to standard time when Daylight Saving time is supposed to hit
  • More evening light will be viewed as Sunrise and Sunset will be earlier
  • The visibility of the Sun becomes shorter as the Sunset occurs earlier
  • Mostly the clocks are reversed an hour while in some parts it is only half an hour (as per the forwarding)

Purpose of practicing Daylight Saving Time

The sole reason to incorporate a useful practice like Daylight Saving time in countries like USA and others is to make more use of the natural light during the day and the reduction of the use of electricity. During the months of summer, the clocks are moved an hour forward to prolong the exposure of daylight. This way, the ratio of using lights in homes and other places will be comparatively small.
